A Preliminary Investigation of Business Chinese Teaching among U.S. Institutions of Higher Education

    Get PDF
This study examined the current practice of college-level for-credit Business Chinese (BC) teaching in the United States (U.S.). Through Internet and manual searches, we found 21 schools offering 39 BC courses. These courses were primarily offered at the advanced level with three credits. In addition, BC teaching was more commonly conducted through a sequence of two to three BC courses than through a single course. Based on interviews with representatives of four BC-course-offering schools, the qualitative part of this study examined BC teaching from a language curriculum development perspective (Brown, 1995). The qualitative data was organized and discussed in terms of the essential elements of a BC curriculum: needs analysis, goals and objectives, testing, materials, teaching, and evaluation

Study on Nano-Silica in Protection of Paper

    Get PDF
In this work , the role of nano-silica in protection of paper works were investigated. Nano-silica was used as protective coating on the surface of the paper. To prove the protective of this coating, the mechanical properties and the ultraviolet absorption of paper were measured, such as tensile strength, folding endurance, tear strength, the glossiness and brightness of paper. The results show that the tensile strength and the folding endurance of paper coated with nano-silica have increased, the tear strength of paper coated with nano-silica has dicrease, and the glossiness and brightness remained unchanged. The paper coated by nano-silica has strong absorption peaks for ultraviolet radiation from 200 nm to 300 nm. &nbsp

Modified Natural Polymer Materials for Paper Protection

    Get PDF
Natural polymer materials, such as cellulose, chitosan, starch, are compatible with paper fiber , which can be used for paper reinforcement. However, due to the poor performance of aging, flexibility, adhesion, it needs to be modified. The progress of the modification of some natural materials in paper artifacts protection is introduced.Research and application of some natural materials in paper artifacts protection is summarized. And the development prospects of paper artifacts protection are also discussed

Progress on Modified Polyurethane for Preservation of Paper Cultural Relic

    Get PDF
Paper cultural relics have extremely high value in research and collection. However, as the time goes on and the environment changes, there will be unfavorable conditions on paper relics, like yellowing, moulding, chalking, aging and embrittlement to some extent. Nowadays, the protection and repair of paper cultural relics are the research emphasis in the field of relics protection. The modified Polyurethane (PU) is an effective material for protecting paper cultural relics and overcome the disadvantages of traditional PU material, including poor polar-solvent resistance and poor heat resistance. Therefore, in this article, the synthesis, properties, applications of modified PU material were summarized and prospects for the research development in the future were look forward

Preparation of Nanometer Silica by Freeze-Drying Chemical Precipitation Method

Nanometer SiO2 with different sizes and shapes is synthesized by coprecipitation technique using sodium silicane as Si source, ammonium chloride as precipitant, ethanol as dispersant, CTAB as regulator. Nanometer SiO2 is obtained from the titration precipitation method and reverse titration precipitation method, respectively.Morphology size distribution and structure of SiO2 particles is characterized by laser particle size analyzer ,microscope and FTIR.The results show that the optimum condition of synthesizing nanometer SiO2 were as follows, the concentration of sodium silicane was 0.4 mol/L, volume ratio of ethanol to water was1:8,pH value was 8.5, concentration of CTAB was 6mmol/l.Spherical silica particles ranging from 3 to 6nm are prepared by the method of reverse titration precipitation and freeze-drying

Analysis of Governmental Role in the Chinese Stock

    Get PDF
By analyzing the unique political-economic context in which the Chinese stock market was established, this paper presents an analysis of the governmental role throughout the history of the Chinese stock market. It shows that the Chinese government is intimately involved in establishing and promoting the stock market in China, and up to now it still keeps some formal and informal connections with the listed companies and the regulatory framework. Motivated by recent success of incorporating game-theoretic approach into macro-economic issues, this paper models the strategic interactions between the government and the investors in the Chinese stock market as a signalling game with asymmetric information. Two sets of signalling mechanisms are proposed: separating equilibrium and pooling equilibrium. An empirical study is carried out by associating the Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite with political news from 1991 to 2002. A signalling mechanism, which is similar to separating equilibrium, is found. Moreover, signal failures, which are caused by the conflicting governmental considerations in the stock market and the relative inexperience of the investors in the Chinese stock market, are revealed in this empirical study as well. Based on these two important findings, we recommend that the Chinese government should change its attitudes towards stock market, and the regulatory system should establish itself as a neutral market referee

In order to improve the strength of paper, solve the problem of poor permeability of traditional resins to paper, the low molecular weight hexamethylenediisocyanate (HDI) trimer was investigated, and the chemical and physical properties of paper samples were tested in this work. Results showed the paper treated by HDI trimer had good mechanical property, the tensile strength was increased from 1105 to 4151 N/m, the folding endurance was increased from 20.8 to 275; and had good glossiness and brightness. Therefore, the prepared HDI trimer has great application prospects in the protection of paper

A fractal-based model for soil water characteristic curve over entire range of water content

Soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) has been an important role in hydraulic engineering, civil engineer and petroleum engineering, etc. Most of SWCC models neglected the film flow in the dry state, so that they cannot accurately describe the SWCC over entire range of water content. In this work, an alternative fractal model is proposed to predict the SWCC over entire range of water content by combining Campbell and Shiozawa model and Tao model. The proposed model can well predict twelve sets of experimental data, and its parameters, including the fractal dimension, the saturated volumetric water content, the matric suction at oven-dry condition, and the air-entry value, accord with theoretical value. The results show that there is a strong linear relationship between volumetric water content and matrix suction in log-log scale for different fractal pore-size distribution of soils. In addition, good agreement is obtained between the experimental data and the model predictions in all of the cases.Cited as: Jin, T., Cai, X., Chen, Y., Jiang, S., Wei, W.
